hello everyone,

i had some questions regarding food allergies. i've been vegan for about 5 years and i think i've had some food allergies the entire time, but am just now starting to take them seriously out of health concerns.

for the past few months i have been keeping a detailed food journal and have been noticing that i have digestion problems whenever i eat or drink: soy milk, tofu, any sort of breads/ noodles with processed flour.

of course i dont have health insurance or even money at the moment to see a nutritionalist, but i was looking for some insight into alternative foods to eat/ any other people who have soy/ wheat/ flour sensitivity, etc.

i've been doing some reading about macrobiotics and have introduced a lot more natural grains into my diet and some lentils and miso. this has seemed to help, but it has definately not solved the issue.

any help would be appreciated!

thanks,
Well..theres this guy I had met a couple weeks ago at a (lets just say adult venue) We got along really well....the chemistry was there......
We had alot of fun.....
We met again the next week and he took me to a big work party that was thrown (he works at hotel Nikko) it was fancy.....kinda boring tho but ok. That nite his car broke down in the tenderloin so it had to be towed..so he came and stayed at my house (i was gonna go to his in daly city..but without the car....)
anyways...the next day and 80 dollars in checkup fees later..the car started fine. They couldnt figure out what was wrong...
Anyways....so today we finally got together since tomorrow is his day off. He came to my house to pick me up to take me to his place...I had been cleaning all day. He wanted to go out to eat, and the only place open was sparkys. Im broke right now so I cant afford to eat out but he wanted to treat me which was very nice. Then all hell broke loose. He asked me to order what I wanted (got a veggie burger since its all they had I could eat)
He had told me he was gonna get a regular burger...and I made some *eww gross* comment....and he said...only kidding Ill get a veggie...
Well he didnt. He ordered a regular one. I told him that I wouldnt kiss him if he ate it..or at the very least hed hafta brush his teeth and rinse with moulthwash before Id come close.....I told him it was a really big turn off.....then I dropped the bomb on him about my veggie beleifs...that I think eating animals is murder. He kept saying he was hungry and wanted the burger....assuming that a veggie burger wouldnt be filling enough for him (which irritated me) Anyways...he ended up ordering a salad instead, while angry because I made a big deal. I realize it wasnt the place or time for it, and Im sure he and everyone reading this probably will think Im an asshole for what I did...but the truth had to come out sooner or later. I can never date a non vegetarian. I have plenty of non veggie friends...but friends and lovers are different. You can love friends from a physical and emotional distance....doesnt work that way (in most cases) for lovers....
Also..he smokes...and Im allergic and vehemently against smoking.....when I walk down the street and get a whiff, I get a headache, nausea, throat closes up and gets sore, etc.....so thats not a match.
He doesnt drink alot...but when he does drink He likes to get nice and toasty...another big turnoff for me. I also dont think its safe to drink 3 glasses of wine and then drive (within a 2 hour period...) I know it may sound extreme, but I like being in the car with completely sober ppl...not buzzed, or stoned etc...
So...anyways....i ate half the veggie burger..of course feeling guilty the whole time...couldnt eat the rest. He picked at his salad....
Then he brought me home, and he left.
Really shitty evening! It was my fault too....
I do beleive what I do, and I do think its important to express that, however it was really shitty timing, and not appropriate at all in the situation.
Sigh.
Oh..and a couple weeks before this a guy I really liked who came over for new years tore a ligament while we were wrestling..and even tho its nobody's fault hes chosen to passive aggressively blame it on me, and not talk to me. So...thats 2 potential love-interests in 2 weeks that has gone sour in one way or another based on actions I initiated. (well..not totally..the guy started wrestling me first) Anyways...shitty shitty shitty!
Where are all the nice queer vegetarian spiritual guys? (who arent old enough to be my father...???)
IF youre out there.....if only......

At the San Francisco International AIDS Conference in 1990, Dr. Luc Montagnier (the French guy who discovered HIV) claimed "HIV Might be Benign" (harmless). He obviously made these statements against his own interests, owning half the rights to the patent on the HIV tests.

"There are over 100,000 studies on HIV/AIDS and there is not one that has direct proof that HIV causes AIDS." - Dr. Peter Duesberg Ph.D., National Academy of Sciences, many have called him the worlds best expert on retrovirology.

If HIV is NOT the cause of AIDS, we are letting millions of people die of a disease while looking in the wrong direction. We would be wasting billions of dollars and would have committed the worst scientific blunder of the 21st century.

Does HIV really cause AIDS?

AIDS has been called the plague of the century and betrayed as some sort of medieval nightmare. We've been told it can strike anyone and everyone is at risk, it has no boundaries. For over 15 years now, AIDS has terrorized social America and we have spent 40 billion dollars and mobilized the greatest scientific research effort in the history of man. In fact, the "War against AIDS" has spent more money and utilized more scientific talent than it took to land on the moon. All this, while focusing on fighting a microscopic enemy (the HIV virus) for over twenty years with no success. So why has AIDS research failed? Could it possibly be that "AIDS research has not failed because it never found a cure...AIDS research has failed because it never found the cause!" as many respected researchers have been claiming ever since the beginning (including the guy who invented HIV). Yup that's right - hundreds of researchers worldwide have claimed HIV is NOT the cause of AIDS. This claim has constantly been dismissed by the government, suppressed in the media, and censored and suppressed (note: not disputed) by the political-economic powers of the AIDS industry. If HIV is NOT the cause of AIDS, we are letting millions of people die of a disease while looking in the wrong direction. We would be wasting billions of dollars, tortured countless animals without justification, and would have committed the worst scientific blunder of the 21st century. To understand why HIV has become the target of the campaign against AIDS, it's important to look back in history.

Following the depression of the 1930's and WWII, America entered a new era of technology and prosperity, as well as society changing as people were having more time for recreation and self realization. We conquered polio, the last great infectious epidemic of the modern world. New antibiotics emerged, giving cures for everything from minor infections to venereal disease. With the emergence of birth control came the sexual revolution; freeing the public from age old fears and norms. Homosexuality found more freedom and acceptance as gays came out of the closet and formed their own subculture. During the Vietnam era of the sixties, recreational drug use skyrocketed among the young and would continue to grow. Yet we remained optimistic that we could solve all our problems through our new faith in science and technology.

Before long, the consequences of this new 'liberated' lifestyle began to rear its ugly head and headlines began to emerge about a 'gay disease' starting in 1981. It was first thought to be caused by behavior unique to homosexuals. But soon, similar conditions began appearing in IV drug users and hemophiliacs. Gay Related Immune Deficiency (GRID), as it was called, was thought to actually be an infectious disease that might spread throughout the entire population. This threat of a deadly infectious disease that could be spread by sexual contact was sensationalized by both the media, as well as enraged gay activists who demanded action by the government. Threats in the media that this disease could be acquired by anyone sexually were now beginning to frighten everyone, not just homosexual males. Suddenly, immune deficiencies found common in only IV drug users, homosexual males, hemophiliacs, blood transfusion patients, and advanced TB patients, became linked together in a microbiological search for a common cause. The collective condition was transformed to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS. As the fear of AIDS spread, and bath houses in San Francisco began to close, The Department of Health came under fire to find the cause and cure quickly. The public was willing to believe that science could find a quick fix. The funding began to roll in and the huge army of virus-hunters who had been unemployed by the unsuccessful cancer/virus program went back to work.

Scientists speculate (and I'm not disagreeing here) that AIDS patients lack the ability to fight infection due to a shortage of T-cells that co-ordinate immunity. In an AIDS patient, the level of T-cells (cells that help white blood cells produce antibodies to fight off infection) is below 200 per microliter of blood. In a healthy person, the level of T-Cells is about 600-1200 per microliter of blood plasma. Someone with AIDS has levels too low that when the patient gets an infectious disease such as the flu, pneumonia, or tuberculosis, their white blood cells cannot fight off the infection. Eventually the immune system gets ravaged by disease and will succumb to death. The official stance today is that the retrovirus HIV is what destroys T-cells and thus what leads to AIDS. But that will be debated as you read on.

But is HIV really what is killing T-cells? In the beginning, a lot of other causes where suspected, such as hard drugs that we know today to cause immunity suppression: heroin, cocaine, poppers, barbiturates, speed, PCP, LSD. Other causes: Malnutrition, repeated infection, overuse of antibiotics, and emotional distress. However these behavior-oriented characteristics where political incorrect to gay activists; who would never want to admit that AIDS could be self-inflicted. At the same time, researchers need money and promised results on being able to find a cure for an infectious disease, just like we did with polio and so many others. So, the decision was made politically, not scientifically, and the infectious epidemic model of AIDS was accepted (over the behavior-related model). Now all researchers had to do was promise to search for a vaccine or treatment and they could get funding.

Dr. Robert Gallo (National Cancer Institute) and Dr. M. Essex (Harvard AIDS Institute) were the first to suggest that "AIDS might be caused by a retrovirus" as early as 1982. Keep in mind that Gallo's prior work at the NCI failed to prove his theory that retroviruses caused cancer. He also failed to show they caused Alzheimer's Disease. Gallo believed to have found the retrovirus HTLV III to be the one that destroys T-cells. He approached the head of U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Margaret Heckler to set up a press conference. On April 23, 1984, Heckler claims "The probable cause of AIDs has been found [HTLV III]" At the same time the press conference was going on, the blood test used to detect HIV was being patented, which would earn Gallo large royalties. Thus the AIDS Industry was born. Heckler claimed that a vaccine ready for testing would be ready by 1986. Everyone was happy that the cause had been found, especially gay activists, who were pleased the government had responded and would do something for them. But before the announcement, Gallo had bypassed a major checkpoint in scientific discoveries: he had not submitted his test results for peer review! Now no one had a chance to critique or verify his claim, and his test results were not published in Science magazine until one week after the press conference. We are talking about a major violation of scientific protocol here. Shortly after, researchers began to attack Gallo. Moreso, an International Lawsuit from France charged Gallo with scientific misconduct, because the Institute Pasteur claimed that Gallo had stole the discovery of Dr. Luc Montagnier, who had sent LTV (HTLV III) samples to Dr. Gallo six months earlier. This issue was settled diplomatically between Ronald Reagan and French President Jacques Chirac. Due to the settlement, the name of the virus was changed to an internationally recognized "HIV" and the profits from the blood tests was agreed to be split between Montagnier and Gallo.

It is now believed by the public that in order to get AIDS, you MUST be infected with HIV. However in Gallo's own original test results (in Science magazine, Vol. 224, May 4 1984), only 44 of 93 AIDS patients tested actually had the HIV virus. But Gallo claimed to be able to reproduce tests where up to 90% of AIDS patients had HIV, as did some other researchers, and thus it was soon internationally accepted by most that HIV must have something to do with AIDS.
Now let's meet one of the most outspoken critics on the HIV/AIDS hypothesis. Dr. Peter Duesberg Ph.D. was the first man to map the genes in viruses (like HIV) in the National Cancer Program at UC Berkley in the 1970's. His memberships include National Academy of Sciences due to his discovery of cancer-causing genes. Having researched retroviruses for over 30 years, many have called him the world's best expert on retrovirology. Dr. Duesberg was skeptical of Gallo's claim from day one. He says that Gallo's claim would have been the first time in the history of human or animal biology that a retrovirus could be the cause of a disease. For the next few years, Dr. Duesberg researched every single scientific publication on HIV and AIDS. When his conclusions came out On March 1st, 1987, in Cancer Research Magazine, he stood alone against the tide of public opinion and the government-funded AIDS Industry. He argues that HIV is not causing AIDS; and that HIV is a harmless passenger virus that has lived in humans for centuries without causing diseases. He believes that AIDS is caused by other non-infectious factors like drug use, and ironically enough, AZT, the AIDS drug. That might come to a shock to those of you who trust pharmaceutical companies: AIDS drugs causing AIDS itself?! Stick with me...

Many of Duesberg's colleagues studied his research and have come to the same conclusion. Among those are Nobel Prize winners like Dr. Walter Gilbert, Biochemistry Dept, Harvard (Nobel Prize, 1980) and Dr. Kary Mullis (invented Polymerase Chain Reaction, or P.C.R., Nobel Prize, 1993). And still, Duesberg's arguments in Cancer Research have still to this day never been responded to by Gallo or anyone else. A group of 12 of these scientists created The Group for Scientific Reappraisal of the HIV/AIDS Hypothesis. The group wrote a statement questioning Gallo's bold conclusions and asking for more independent research on HIV and AIDS. They wrote letters to practically every medical journal asking that their four-sentence long statement be printed; each time it was rejected. This made them angry, and they sought out to expand the list. It soon became 100 signatures and by 1994 reached 600; of these 188 had advanced degrees. The group of scientists has operated a newsletter and website for years now. Thus, many in the scientific community (including experts on virus' like HIV) have questioned the HIV/AIDS hypothesis from day one.

At the San Francisco International AIDS Conference in 1990, Dr. Luc Montagnier (the French guy who discovered HIV) claimed "HIV Might be Benign" (harmless). He obviously made these statements against his own interests, owning half the rights to the patent on the HIV tests. But the conference attendees were too brainwashed and kept going on talking about new antiviral drug treatments.
Why is the scientific community (really, only those who write scientific journals and who dictate what is taught in schools) ignoring such credible scientists? "Too many people are making too much money off of it" claims Dr. Charles Thomas, Fmr. Harvard Professor and Founder of the Group for Scientific Reappraisal of the HIV/AIDS Hypothesis. Dr. Thomas has learned that after two decades of his group being denied publicity, "...money is much stronger than truth." So...now you know why contesting the HIV/AIDS hypothesis has failed to overcome the scientific community. Now it's time you (the public) learn 10 Scientific Reasons HIV does NOT cause AIDS, and What the REAL causes of AIDS could be. It will also explain why conventional sex does not spread AIDS and why clean needles or condoms will do little or nothing to stop AIDS.

10 Scientific Reasons HIV does NOT cause AIDS

1. HIV (like all other viruses) is harmless after antibody immunity.
The HIV test does not test for presence or proliferation of HIV, or if it is attacking cells. The test shows if you have antibodies for the virus. If you have antibodies to chickenpox or the measles, it means you had it already. The virus is either eliminated or lays inactive in your body and will never make you sick again because your body has the antibodies to fight it if it begins to proliferate. Thus, when a person tests "HIV positive" this actually means they are now immune to the virus. This is why we give people vaccines, so that our bodies can produce antibodies against infectious diseases. No known viruses can proliferate faster than the body can produce antibodies to fight it off, and no known virus has been found to cause an illness ONLY AFTER the antibodies have done their job. Very rarely some infectious viruses can re-infect the host, but none of them do this ONLY AFTER antibodies are present.

2. HIV does not kill the T-cells it infects.
Because HIV infects T-cells, it was thought that HIV was killing them. But only under rare laboratory conditions do retroviruses kill their host cells. In fact, HIV researchers use T-cells to grow the virus because T-cells live compatibly with HIV.

3. HIV does not infect enough T-cells to cause AIDS.
Shortly after HIV is brought under control by the antibodies, the billions of virus particles become dormant and begin to disappear. HIV infects only 1 out of 1,000-100,000 T-cells. T-cells can reproduce at a rate of 5% per day. Therefore, even if HIV killed T-cells, it does not infect enough cells at a time to lower T-cell count and bring down the immune system. This is a notorious flaw in the HIV/AIDS hypothesis that supporters even claim has loose change. This is the reason it has been so hard to isolate the HIV virus (and thus create a vaccine for it); because it is so rare and hard to find.

4. HIV has no AIDS-causing Gene.
All retroviruses have only three major genes, GAG, ENV, and POL, and six minor genes. The amount of and sequences of genes in retroviruses is so limited, so they need all the genes to replicated. HIV is almost genetically identical to all other retroviruses. There are 50-100 different retroviruses that can be found in every healthy human body. HIV reacts no different than any of these in the way it mutates, becomes dormant, and re-activates. If none of these other retroviruses cause AIDS, why should HIV? If HIV DOES cause AIDS, why DON'T all the rest?

5. There is no such thing as a slow virus.
HIV is said to be a "slow virus" that takes 10-12 years after infection to cause AIDS. The only way to explain this would be to give HIV magical abilities to reactivate, mutate, migrate, and hibernate. Supporters of the slow virus myth base their hypothesis on studies of Epstein Barr, which they thought would include a cancer infection 10 years later, or herpes viruses, that reemerge in persons who have suppressed immunity and can't generate a sufficient defense. These both differ from HIV because large amounts of active virus can be found causing specific symptoms. In HIV, there are no symptoms until 10 years later. In total contrast, HIV is inactive but said to cause 30 different diseases 10 years later; none specific to HIV itself (some of those diseases, all of which are previously known include: strongyloldosis, aspergillosis, cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis, herpes simplex, Kaposi's sarcoma, toxoplasmosis, lymphoma, cytomegalovirus, leukoanceophalopathy, cryptosporidiosis, dementia). Viruses cause disease days, or weeks or at the very most, after infection - how long is a direct function of the "generation time" which is how long it takes the virus to infect the cell and generate new virus particles.

6. HIV is not a new virus, so it could not cause a "new" epidemic.
AIDS cases have increased exponentially ever since 1981. But HIV cases have stayed at roughly one million ever since the Center for Disease Control started testing in 1995. So for the last decade, we've had approximately the same number of people measured with HIV. Farr's Law of dating viruses states that an infectious virus will spread exponentially in a population (like a seasonal flu epidemic). If we've had the same number of HIV cases every year, HIV must be an old virus. HIV must have been infecting every generation for centuries, without causing AIDS. Duesberg claims HIV probably came into America with the first immigrants, and that anyone who has antibodies to it today, has gotten it parentally; from their mothers, not from dirty needles or unsafe sex.

7. HIV fails Koch's Postulates.
The universal test used by scientists to determine if a disease is being caused by an infection was developed over 100 years ago by Robert Koch, The Father of Bacteriology. Koch's Postulates states that 1) the organism/virus must be found in all cases of the disease, 2) you can isolate the organism and then 3) inject it into a new healthy host, and it causes the same disease in the new host, and 4) it must be found growing in the newly-diseased host. HIV fails part one because 10-20% of all AIDS patients have no HIV at all. When HIV is found, it is only in tiny amounts and is dormant. HIV fails part three because when health care workers accidentally are infected they rarely get AIDS (unless they use recreational drugs or AZT!).

8. AIDS has remained in its original risk groups for over 12 years; and different risk groups develop different diseases.
If a disease does not spread, it must be caused by something non-infectious. CDC studies show that AIDS is not spreading among the population at large and it is locked among its original risk groups; homosexual males (62%), IV drug users (32%), hemophiliacs (1%), and transfusion patients (2%) [CDC, Pharmac. Therm. Vol. 55, 1992]. Although HIV is evenly spread among men and women 50/50, AIDS cases are 90% male, 10% female [U.S. Army 1985-1996]. This could explain why drug use is more related to AIDS than HIV infection: In the U.S., males use over 80% of all hard psychoactive drugs. Among women with AIDS, approximately 60% use hard drugs also.

IV Drug Users who are HIV positive and die of AIDS develop Tuberculosis, Pneumonias, and Wasting Syndrome, whereas gay males (who do a lot of poppers) develop Kaposi's Sarcoma and Cytomegalovirus. The slow, wasting deaths of heroin addicts and other drug addicts have been documented in medical literature since 1898. What is interesting is that these same diseases are present in those risk groups WITH OR WITHOUT HIV. Drug users also loose the same T-cells as those who are HIV positive.

9. The International profile of AIDS patients is inconsistent.
A germ related disease would affect populations consistently. In the U.S., AIDS patients are 90% male 10% female. In Africa AIDS patients are 50% male 50% female. In the U.S., 97% of AIDS cases are among risk groups. In Africa, it affects people at random and there are no risk groups. Why does AIDS react differently in the Industrialized world? The best explanation for this is that HIV does not cause AIDS, and that in Africa, there is widespread malnutrition, parasitic infection, poor sanitation and other conditions causing immune deficiency. Those that test HIV positive and die of immune conditions are thus counted amongst official AIDS statistics. In the U.S. and Europe, where malnutrition is not a problem but where IV drugs are available and used mostly among males, we have 90% of immune deficiency among males, those of which who are HIV positive are counted amongst official AIDS statistics. One incentive for African countries to report deaths from diarrhea or poor sanitation as "AIDS" is to get money from the United Nations or World Health Organization.

10. AIDS occurs without HIV infection and most people with HIV never develop AIDS.
The evidence in support of the HIV/AIDS hypothesis is based SOLELY on correlation. Correlation does NOT mean causation. In the beginning, the official statistics showed that there were 4,621 cases of those who have died of AIDS but were found to be HIV negative. Since then, the official definition of AIDS was created to eliminate every case of AIDS without HIV. So as Dr. Richard Strohman, Ph.D., Fmr. Professor of Cell Biology at UC Berkeley says, "If you ignore all the cases where there isn't a correlation; [of course] there is a correlation...it's a self-fulfilling prophecy...it's not scientific" So, when someone dies of one or more of 30 specific diseases and are HIV positive, they are said to have died of AIDS. But when someone dies of one or more of 30 specific previously known diseases, but are found HIV negative, they die of that specific disease, be it pneumonia or TB. Those patients are NOT counted among the AIDS statistics and the data is skewed to create a perfect correlation: everyone who dies of AIDS had HIV. The WHO estimated in 1996 that 28.1 million people worldwide were HIV infected, and there were only 1.4 million AIDS cases. Therefore, 95% of those with HIV do not have AIDS.

Furthermore, the list of diseases that AIDS encompasses has increased over the years, and has skewed the data to make it look like the number of AIDS cases is actually increasing. Whereas dying of one of 10 diseases and having HIV was considered an AIDS death, today one of 30 diseases and having HIV is sufficient to count in official statistics as an AIDS death. By increasing the number of AIDS cases to make it look like an epidemic, AIDS researchers, AIDS charities, the United Nations, WHO, and third-world countries all can demand or expect an increase in funding. But if you question the official hypothesis, you are threatening a lot of people with some serious money. You are also frightening religious conservatives who can use the fear of AIDS to promote abstinence. That's not to say that I really believe that either of them are "in on a conspiracy." I just think that this is a big gigantic scientific blunder, which many researchers and charities are too close-minded to open up for discussion because they know they benefit from the myth too much. If we continue to put all our eggs in one basket, and continue to fail to produce any meaningful research to help people with AIDS, and if we ignore what could be the true causes (drugs), we are allowing 100's of 1000's of people to die from preventable causes each year.

I'm not completely sure. But based on how it probably isn't HIV means we should shift the funding to finding out the true cause of AIDS. But here is what Duesberg and others hypothesize (but aren't boldly claiming without concrete proof, unlike Gallo did): Drugs are the cause of AIDS in 9 out of 10 cases. Since 1981, there has been an increase in the cocaine and heroin use in the U.S. [use, overdoses, and hospital visit data, CDC], and the correlation between these drugs and AIDS cases correlate pretty well. Whereas, the correlation between HIV and AIDS does not. HIV has remained affecting 1 million people every year, and AIDS has skyrocketed from zero to half a million over a decade. Unlike HIV, we have a pretty good idea of how drugs suppress the immune system. It should be no awakening revelation to us all that hard drugs, especially drugs that "speed" you up and make you able to stay awake for days, have an adverse effect on your immune system. It's like owning a car and once a week, driving it 160 mph for days straight without rest. Of course the car isn't going to last as long as if you were to drive it 60 mph! So far no long term studies on drug use and AIDS has been conducted even though hard drug users who loose the same T-cells as AIDS patients, and who develop the same diseases as AIDS patients. But what we have done is promoted hard drug use by passing out clean needles and telling addicts it's OK to do drugs as long as you don't get HIV.

Why are 60% of AIDS patients in the U.S. gay males? There are two possible reasons. First, let's look at drug use. It's amazing that 96% of all gay males have used one drug that was available legally, known by many as 'poppers' or nitrate inhalants. In addition, 90% use marijuana, 50-70% amphetamines, 40-60% LSD, 25% barbiturates, 10% heroin, 50-60% cocaine, etc, etc. , Poppers are knows to cause Kaposi's Sarcoma, a rare form of skin cancer that affects around the nose, lungs, throat, and skin. It is found very high in gay men not infected with HIV.

Next, let's look at the preferred method that many gays have sex: anal intercourse. Whereas the vaginal tissue lining is 3 layers thick, the anal tissue lining is only one layer thick. During sex, the anus tears and foreign viruses along with semen and bacteria have a direct route into the blood. Contamination with feces and bacteria has been blamed for 'gay bowel syndrome' where the rectum and colon become inflamed, accompanied by diarrhea and malnutrition. Foreign proteins found in sperm have been found to be immune-suppressant. It has been suggested that when they enter the blood, they can trigger an autoimmune reaction, where the bodies' immune system turns upon itself. Small cuts on the penis are routes by which infection can spread to the person on the giving end. The use of condoms can protect against these foreign proteins from entering the blood, but is still not enough to protect the recipient from rectal tearing, which still exposes them to chemicals used as lubricants. Is it possible that lots of anal sex that produces infections in the anus can possible cause AIDS? This is very possible; especially when done in connection with heavy drug use.
Many gay AIDS patients (the promiscuous and sexually active ones) have multiple infections of gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis A and B, herpes, cytomegalovirus, and other diseases. To combat these repeated infections, gays take huge amounts of antibiotics (which are drugs!), which also wear down the immune system. In retrospect, it is not all gay males who are at risk for AIDS, but just those who are living one type of gay lifestyle: the fast-track, heavy drug use, and sexually promiscuous one. These make up a very small percentage of gay males.

OK, what accounts for the other 1 out of 10 AIDS Cases besides recreational drug use? Why the AIDS correlation between blood transfusion patients and hemophiliacs? It is a medical fact that the more blood you receive during a medical procedure, the less your chance of survival. About half of all transfusion patients die within one year after receiving a transfusion. It's the same reason your body will reject the organ from a non-human animal, or why there may be a risk for foreign proteins found in sperm or feces getting into the blood system. In order for your immune system to be healthy, your body would like your own blood and it wants it to be clean. The risk of AIDS in transfusion patients directly corresponds with how much blood they received and the condition of their illness; but not whether or not the person's blood they received had HIV (antibodies) in it. Duesberg claims that specifically, it is foreign proteins found in clotting factor VIII that have a dose-response in suppressing immunity among hemophiliacs. A British study (the Darby Study) on HIV/AIDS and hemophiliacs seems to support the HIV/AIDS theory by showing an increase in deaths among hemophiliacs testing HIV positive, but the study failed to control for the foreign proteins and thus it is possible that it was these that were actually causing immunosuppression, not HIV. The most alarming observation about this study shows a huge spike in deaths among HIV positive hemophiliacs, around 1984, and more exaggerated in 1988. 1984 is when hemophiliacs started to be tested for HIV and told if they had HIV. Since emotional distress has been known to cause immunosuppression, can there be an effect from the fear, terrorization, and diagnosis of death one has when told they have HIV and will die of AIDS? Furthermore, the 1988 exponential spike can easily be explained by the introduction and increased access to the first major AIDS drug, AZT.

How AIDS Drugs Cause AIDS: AZT was a poisonous chemotherapy drug that was banned because it destroyed the immune systems of cancer patients too badly. In 1987, when the AIDS scare was at its height, the FDA was pressured to re-approve the drug, this time for those with HIV/AIDS. It is even prescribed for people who are healthy, and have no sign of AIDS (but are HIV positive). It does not cure AIDS, and is only supposed to slow the progression. It does this by destroying all cells randomly. AZT destroys the genes and cells, especially in the bone marrow where white blood cells are made. These are the very cells that AIDS patients need the most yet they are being destroyed by "AIDS drugs"! Yup - that's a good name for them; call them what they are: AIDS Drugs. AZT destroys bone marrow, kidneys, liver, intestines, muscle tissue, the brain, and central nerve system. Because HIV infects 1 out of 1,000 T-cells, 999 healthy t-cells must die to kill 1 HIV-infected cell. Even the drug literature itself admits that AZT causes this. AZT clinical trials were an abysmal failure and even FDA Toxicologist requested that AZT not be approved. However, AIDS activists won a "victory" by getting the FDA to approve AZT. AZT costs a patient an expensive $8,000-12,000 a year, mostly paid for by the tax-payer. The maker of AZT was Glaxo Wellcome, today GlaxoSmithKline, who have generated sales of over a billion dollars a year just from AZT! A bottle of AZT costs $5 to make but is sold at $500 and the markup is subsidized by the taxpayers. AZT tricks patients, because initially it creates a small increase in the amount of T-cells. Duesberg explains, "when you go on AZT, it starts destroying your bone marrow, and your immune system says overproduce as much as you can...and for a while people start producing more [T-cells] than they did before the treatment [AZT]. As Dr. Charles Thomas, Jr., Ph.D., explains, "All toxic substances, initially, administer a positive response for a little while, for example...making a person stronger and healthier, for example, low level doses of radiation...ethylene chloride [etc], produce a lengthening of a lifespan of rodents...higher doses of course will kill them." Duesberg says that within a year or two, those on AZT die from it. Worldwide, 200,000 people, many who are not sick and who have no AIDS symptoms, are being treated with AZT.

Studies show that physicians are less likely to question authority than other professionals. As long as the HIV/AIDS theory is the official stance of the American Medical Association and U.S. Department of Health, physicians will not question it. If HIV is harmless and AZT is what is causing patients to die, physicians will probably be the last to know. AIDS deaths from those on AZT are 25% higher than those not on the drugs. And at the International AIDS Conference in Berlin in 1993, it was admitted AZT was ineffective in preventing AIDS among HIV positives.

Tremendous pressure is put on women to get HIV-tested and to be treated with AZT if they are found to be HIV positive. This has been found to cause abortion, malformed heads, extra fingers and toes, and holes in vital organs like the heart. Even if we are to say that HIV could be dangerous, it still does not make sense to feed AZT to pregnant mothers and their babies. Within 12-18 months after birth, 40-90% of babies who test HIV positive at birth are later HIV negative, because they develop their own immune system. Mothers who refuse to take AZT or giving it to their baby can find their physician calling Child Protection Services and having them arrested and jailed. Worst of all, their babies can be taken away from them indefinitely and placed into foster homes and submitted to AZT. Adopted children are usually tested for HIV before entering the U.S., and many have been forcibly put on AZT and have since died as a result.

Other newer AIDS drugs, like ddI and ddC are similar to AZT; in the same class of "chain terminators." The newest types of treatment for AIDS are Protease Inhibitors, which are supposed to prevent the virus from detaching from the cell, so that it cannot reproduce and affect new cells. Pharmaceutical corporations that produce protease inhibitors, like Hoffman-LaRoche (Saquinavir), Abbot Labs (Ritonavir), and Merck (Indinavir), all announce their drugs at press conferences (and see skyrocketing share-prices starting that day) rather than publish their research for scientific review. Dr. Duesberg has researched extensively and says he found "no clinical benefits of these protease inhibitors whatsoever."

Well I hope that sort of helps everyone think about what other scientists are saying and If you feel compelled to question this a little deeper, theres more info on AIDS specifically can be found at The Group for Scientific Reappraisal of the HIV/AIDS Hypothesis's website, www.rethinkaids.com or virusmyth.net or by google video-ing Aids Hoax. The information is out there, so research it more and learn the truth.

"Native Americans and Vegetarianism"

By Rita Laws, Ph.D.

How well we know the stereotype of the rugged Plains Indian: killer of buffalo, dressed in quill-decorated buckskin, elaborately feathered eaddress, and leather moccasins, living in an animal skin teepee, master of the dog and horse, and stranger to vegetables. But this lifestyle, once limited almost exclusively to the Apaches, flourished no more than a couple hundred years. It is not representative of most Native Americans of today or yesterday. Indeed, the "buffalo-as-lifestyle" phenomenon is a direct result of European influence, as we shall see.

Among my own people, the Choctaw Indians of Mississippi and Oklahoma, vegetables are the traditional diet mainstay. A French manuscript of the eighteenth century describes the Choctaws' vegetarian leanings in shelter and food. The homes were constructed not of skins, but of wood, mud, bark and cane. The principal food, eaten daily from earthen pots, was a vegetarian stew containing corn, pumpkin and beans. The bread was made from corn and acorns. Other common favorites were roasted corn and corn porridge. (Meat in the form of small game was an infrequent repast.) The ancient Choctaws were, first and foremost, farmers. Even the clothing was plant based, artistically embroidered dresses for the women and cotton breeches for the men. Choctaws have never adorned their hair with feathers.

The rich lands of the Choctaws in present-day Mississippi were so greatly coveted by nineteenth century Americans that most of the tribe was forcibly removed to what is now called Oklahoma. Oklahoma was chosen both because it was largely uninhabited and because several explorations of the territory had deemed the land barren and useless for any purpose. The truth, however, was that Oklahoma was so fertile a land that it was an Indian breadbasket. That is, it was used by Indians on all sides as an agricultural resource. Although many Choctaws suffered and died during removal on the infamous "Trail of Tears", those that survived built anew and successfully in Oklahoma, their agricultural genius intact.

George Catlin, the famous nineteenth century Indian historian, described the Choctaw lands of southern Oklahoma in the 1840's this way: "...the ground was almost literally covered with vines, producing the greatest profusion of delicious grapes,...and hanging in such endless clusters... our progress was oftentimes completely arrested by hundreds of acres of small plum trees...every bush that was in sight was so loaded with the weight of its...fruit, that they were in many instances literally without leaves on their branches, and quite bent to the ground... and beds of wild currants, gooseberries, and (edible) prickly pear." (Many of the "wild" foods Anglo explorers encountered on their journeys were actually carefully cultivated by Indians.)

Many of the Choctaw foods cooked at celebrations even today are vegetarian. Corn is so important to us it is considered divine. Our corn legend says that is was a gift from Hashtali, the Great Spirit. Corn was given in gratitude because Choctaws had fed the daughter of the Great Spirit when she was hungry. (Hashtali is literally "Noon Day Sun". Choctaws believe the Great Spirit resides within the sun, for it is the sun that allows the corn to grow!)

Another Choctaw story describes the afterlife as a giant playground where all but murderers are allowed. What do Choctaws eat in "heaven"? Their sweetest treat, of course: melons, a never-ending supply.

More than one tribe has creation legends which describe people as vegetarian, living in a kind of Garden of Eden. A Cherokee legend describes humans, plants, and animals as having lived in the beginning in "equality and mutual helpfulness". The needs of all were met without killing one another. When man became aggressive and ate some of the animals, the animals invented diseases to keep human population in check. The plants remained friendly, however, and offered themselves not only as food to man, but also as medicine, to combat the new diseases.

More tribes were like the Choctaws than were different. Aztec, Mayan, and Zapotec children in olden times ate 100% vegetarian diets until at least the age of ten years old. The primary food was cereal, especially varieties of corn. Such a diet was believed to make the child strong and disease resistant. (The Spaniards were amazed to discover that these Indians had twice the life-span they did.) A totally vegetarian diet also insured that the children would retain a life-long love of grains, and thus, live a healthier life. Even today, the Indian healers of those tribes are likely to advise the sick to "return to the arms of Mother Corn" in order to get well. Such a return might include eating a lot of atole. (The easiest way to make atole is to simmer commercially produced masa harina corn flour with water. Then flavor it with chocolate or cinnamon, and sweeten to taste.) Atole is considered a sacred food.

It is ironic that Indians are strongly associated with hunting and fishing when, in fact, "nearly half of all the plant foods grown in the world today were first cultivated by the American Indians, and were unknown elsewhere until the discovery of the Americas." Can you imagine Italian food without tomato paste, Ireland without white potatoes, or Hungarian goulash without paprika? All these foods have Indian origins.

An incomplete list of other Indian foods given to the world includes bell peppers, red peppers, peanuts, cashews, sweet potatoes, avocados, passion fruit, zucchini, green beans, kidney beans, maple syrup, lima beans, cranberries, pecans, okra, chocolate, vanilla, sunflower seeds, pumpkin, cassava, walnuts, forty-seven varieties of berries, pineapple, and, of course, corn and popcorn.

Many history textbooks tell the story of Squanto, a Pawtuxent Indian who lived in the early 1600's. Squanto is famous for having saved the Pilgrims from starvation. He showed them how to gather wilderness foods and how to plant corn.

There have been thousands of Squantos since, even though their names are not so well-known. In fact modern day agriculture owes its heart and soul to Indian-taught methods of seed development, hybridization, planting, growing, irrigating, storing, utilizing and cooking. And the spirit of Squanto survives to this day. One example is a Peruvian government research station tucked away in a remote Amazon Indian village called Genaro Herrera. University trained botanists, agronomists and foresters work there, scientifically studying all the ways the local Indians grow and prepare food. They are also learning how to utilize forests without destroying them, and how to combat pests without chemicals.

The trend that moved some North American Indian tribes away from plant food-based diets can be traced to Coronado, a sixteenth century Spanish explorer. Prior to his time, hunting was a hobby among most Indians, not a vocation. The Apaches were one of the few tribes who relied heavily on animal killing for survival.

But all that changed as Coronado and his army traversed the West and Midwest from Mexico. Some of his horses got away and quickly multiplied on the grassy plains. Indians re-tamed this new denizen, and the Age of Buffalo began.

Horses replaced dogs as beasts of burden and offered excellent transportation. This was as important an innovation to the Plains Indians as the automobile would be to Anglos later on. Life on the Plains became much easier very quickly.

>From the east came another powerful influence: guns. The first American settlers brought their firearms with them. Because of the Indian "threat", they were soon immersed in weapons development and succeeded in making more accurate and powerful weapons. But they also supplied weapons to Indians who allied themselves with colonial causes. Because it was so much easier to kill an animal with a rifle than with a bow and arrow, guns spread quickly among the Indians. Between the horse and the rifle, buffalo killing was now much simpler.

The Apaches were joined by other tribes, such as the Sioux, Cheyenne, Arapahos, Comanches, and Kiowas. These tribes "lost the corn", gave up agriculture, and started living nomadic existences for the first time. It wasn't long before their food, clothing, and shelter were entirely dependent on one animal, the buffalo.

George Catlin lamented this fact as early as 1830. He predicted the extinction of the buffalo (which very nearly happened) and the danger of not being diversified. Catlin pointed out that, were the Plains Indians only killing a buffalo for their own use, the situation might not be so grave. But because the great beasts were being slaughtered for profit, they were destined to be wiped out.

It was the white man who profited. There was an insatiable Eastern market for buffalo tongue and buffalo robes. In 1832, Catlin described a wholesale buffalo slaughter carried out by six hundred Sioux on horseback. These men killed fourteen hundred animals, and then took only their tongues. These were traded to whites for a few gallons of whiskey. The whiskey, no doubt, helped to dull the Indian talent to make maximum use of an animal. Among the tribes who did not trade with whites, each animal was completely used, down to the hooves. No part went to waste. And buffalo were not killed in the winter, for the Indians lived on autumn dried meat during that time.

But now buffalo were killed in the winter most of all. It was in cold weather that their magnificent coats grew long and luxuriant. Catlin estimated that 200,000 buffalo were killed each year to make coats for people back East. The average hide netted the Indian hunter one pint of whiskey.

Had the Indians understood the concept of animal extinction, they may have ceased the slaughter. But to the Indians, the buffalo was a gift from the Great Spirit, a gift which would always keep coming. Decades after the disappearance of huge herds, Plains Indians still believed their return was imminent. They danced the Ghost Dance, designed to bring back the buffalo, and prayed for this miracle as late as 1890.

In spite of the ease and financial incentives of killing buffalo, there were tribes that did not abandon the old ways of the Plains. In addition to the farming tribes of the Southeast, tribes in the Midwest, Southwest, and Northwest stuck to agriculture. For example, the Osage, Pawnee, Arikaras, Mandans, Wichitas, and Caddoans remained in permanent farming settlements. Even surrounded by buffalo, they built their homes of timber and earth. And among some of the Indians of the Southwest, cotton, basketry, and pottery were preferred over animal-based substitutes like leather pouches.

Catlin was eerily accurate when he predicted dire consequences for the buffalo-dependent tribes. To this day, it is these Indians who have fared the worst from assimilation with other races. The Sioux of South Dakota, for one, have the worst poverty and one of the highest alcoholism rates in the country. Conversely, the tribes who depended little or not at all on animal exploitation for their survival, like the Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek, and Chickasaw, are thriving and growing, having assimilated without surrendering their culture.

In the past, and in more than a few tribes, meat-eating was a rare activity, certainly not a daily event. Since the introduction of European meat-eating customs, the introduction of the horse and the gun, and the proliferation of alcoholic beverages and white traders, a lot has changed. Relatively few Indians can claim to be vegetarians today.

But it was not always so. For most Native Americans of old, meat was not only not the food of choice, its consumption was not revered (as in modern times when Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving as if it were a religious duty). There was nothing ceremonial about meat. It was a plant, tobacco, that was used most extensively during ceremonies and rites, and then only in moderation. Big celebrations such as Fall Festivals centered around the harvest, especially the gathering of the corn. The Choctaws are not the only ones who continue to dance the Corn Dance.

What would this country be like today if the ancient ways were still observed? I believe it is fair to say that the Indian respect for non-human life forms would have had a greater impact on American society. Corn, not turkey meat, might be the celebrated Thanksgiving Day dish. Fewer species would have become extinct, the environment would be healthier, and Indian and non-Indian Americans alike would be living longer and healthier lives. There might also be less sexism and racism, for many people believe that, as you treat your animals (the most defenseless), so you will treat your children, your women, and your minorities.

Without realizing it, the Indian warriors and hunters of ages past played right into the hands of the white men who coveted their lands and their buffalo. When the lands were taken from them, and the buffalo herds decimated, there was nothing to fall back on. But the Indians who chose the peaceful path and relied on diversity and the abundance of plants for their survival were able to save their lifestyles. Even after being moved to new lands they could hang on, re-plant, and go forward.

Now we, their descendants, must recapture the spirit of the ancient traditions for the benefit of all people. We must move away from the European influences that did away with a healthier style of living. We must again embrace our brothers and sisters, the animals, and "return to the corn" once and for all.

(Rita Laws is Choctaw and Cherokee. She lives and writes in Oklahoma. Her Choctaw name, Hina Hanta, means Bright Path of Peace, which is what she considers vegetariansim to be. She has been vegetarian for over 14 years.)

(I submitted the following to some one's queer vegan zine:)

"BECAUSE THEY ARE VEGAN" by Damien Komatsu

No, I'm not a chicken hawk.

No, I'm not an Anglophile.

No, I am not a typical gay man with a "straight boy fetish".

It is true that the majority of men that I am attracted to are young, white and straight.
But that is because they are vegan. (and maybe because they are usually punk...)
It always seems that of all the attractive men I meet, between the ages of 18 and 35, I always seem to like the straight ones the best. And I repeat: it is not because they are straight, it is because they are VEGAN.

I have a hard time dating meat-eaters.

It's not just an ethical thing. Maybe it is subconscious (or unconscious, whichever adjective fits better). I am well aware that a queer male vegan is a very rare thing, and being that as a homosexual man, I am going to have to be open to my potential partner's eating habits. So I do my best to be realistic and make compromises. That, or wait until I get lucky, hoping my libido will last that long.

Right now I'm single. Some times I have short term open relationships. Once, and not so long ago, I had a boyfriend for 7 months-- well actually it was 6 months and a whole month of break-up sex. And he was vegetarian. Almost. Every so often I have heard him talk with a friend about going out for fish tacos (no- not a sexual metaphor- he is TOTALLY queer!) or something else NOT veggie, and I suspected that he was just pretending to be vegetarian for PC points.

I have a theory about food and pheromones.
Because, for the most part, I seem to be automatically attracted to certain men BEFORE I learn that they are vegan; before I have established their sexual identity to be confirmed positively as hetero. After many years of being strictly vegan (some times lacto-freegan in desperate moments), I think I react more favorably to body smells that are undetectable to the left side of my brain. My scent receptors, my brain and my libido all conspire against me.
Example 1: some guy is hot-- he sleeps with men and is happy in doing so (more or less)-- he wants me and I think he is beautiful, has a great body and even seems to be on my wavelength of intelligence based on our conversations. We should be perfect for each other. But some how, my heart is not with it, neither is that particular muscle that lets blood flow into my penis and makes sure it stays there, if you know what I mean.
Example 2: there is an older man-- he is not straight-- he is very handsome-- every time I saw him I couldn't stop staring at him until he was gone. Every time I saw him my mind fell right into the gutter. Then later I saw him walking by drinking Silk brand chocolate soymilk. I comment on it and he replies "IT'S GOOD FOR YOU!" But apparently he thought I was creepy so we never hooked up. Or maybe his boyfriend had something to do with it.
But example 3 is the most common example: I meet some punk guy. We are inexplicitly drawn to each other. Then the subject of veganism comes up and we are that much closer. It seems like we are about to kiss when he brings up THE GIRLFRIEND. Or he'll say some thing like "I'm totally against oppression of any type. I'm against racist even though I am white; and I'm against homophobia even though--" and that voice in my head screams DON'T SAY IT but he does "-- I'm straight".
Part of my theory is that the more vegan he is, the stronger my libido responds to him. Like the boyfriend mentioned above: some times we had great sex, but other times I just couldn't get into it. Even less so with the guy I dated who only ate fish- and this was a fact I discovered a couple weeks into our short term relationship. I figured that the alcohol I was drinking at the time enabled me to bypass my alleged distaste for carnivorous pheromones. But in the 2 weeks we slept together, my libido was temperamental.

Well, to be completely honest, there might be exceptions to my vegan pheromone theory, so I can't totally prove it. I am not attracted to just any old vegan. He just has to be a real cute vegan. There are many straight vegans that just don't do it for me. And occasionally, I meet a vegan queer man and we become friends. Just friends. As with all pairings of two individuals, I may like him, he may like me, but it is rarely mutual. Or if it is, that doesn't mean we have the ideas concerning between fling and any kind of relationship, short term long term monogamous polyamorous etc. You know, the same with dating a meat eater.
It is not that I am so picky, I fall in love several times a day. Ha ha ha, okay-- but walking around downtown Portland or Valencia Street in San Francisco, I pass by several men that I would be interested in getting to know better, if you know what I mean. For the sake of being realistic, I give it an average of queer potential-- out, closeted, or heteroflexible; either is fine with me-- say, the basic 10%. Then give room for mutual attraction, that should give me at least half a dozen new partners a week... if I could get up the nerve to hit on them!

I really must continue to protest the gay-man-want-straight-boy insinuations. And for many reasons, but mostly because it is a trendy cliche- an automatic response only because it is THE THING to say. Many of the men I find myself attracted to generally fall in that gray space of "Is He...?" (as in that "Kids in the Hall" skit); they are not lumberjacks and yet they are not like any of the characters that you'd see in "Queer as Folk". The ones I want don't fit the traditional (1950s modernist) masculine roles of what it means to be a man. There is always some thing kind of queer about them, a little ambiguous.
"Oh, you mean METROSEXUALS!"
No, I don't. If I wanted a metrosexual, "I'd sleep with a real woman"*. I mean the kind of guy who is artistic, socially sensitive, cooperative rather than competitive, his outward appearance is always some where in the gender neutral zone. And by that I mean that he is not a trendy fashion victim like the stereotypical gay man or the metrosexual; nor is he dressed like a thug or a jock or a trailer trash redneck (why is it fashionable to dress like that now?). He may have very short hair, very long hair, or any kind of hair in between- but his hair never makes him look particularly masculine OR feminine. He may be any where between 18 and 35, but he always looks like a college student- some kind of aesthetic Peter Pan complex.
I suppose that is why I like anarcho-punks so much- there is little difference between the clothes the men and the women. And most of the straight men that I have the biggest crushes on come from this sub-culture. And in all fairness, I have to admit that I have made out with most of said individuals. More often than not, these guys are "not ready to date" or have sex with another man, but they seem to enjoy making out with other guys. Must be the tofu*.
There are a few others who are heterosexual serial monogamists, but occasionally make open references to cute punk boys like it is a normal phrase in their vocabulary; even others who will discuss the all male porn they recently watched, like it was a show on the Discovery Channel. This specific type usually claims to be bisexual in theory, but as I mentioned, they also tend to be serial monogamists and their partners are almost always women.

Of course, this doesn't mean I only like punks because that is the scene I fit comfortably in. It also doesn't mean that, even if these guys are are actually bisexual, they would automatically want to sleep with me. In the past, I have slept with many bisexual and bi-curious punks, some who now have children or identify as straight. Unfortunately, very few of them are still vegan. It almost feels as if they went through both their experimental-sexuality phase and their compassion-for-factory-animals phase at the same time.

I am aesthetically attracted to men of various types, scenes, ages between 18-35, and racial/ethnic backgrounds; and some times my sexual pull is stronger than my admiration for their beauty. I've actively made attempts to spend more time with queer men on all sides of the queer spectrum. Some of my best friends are gay!
But the straight men in my life have been more kind, accepting and open-minded about my homosexual practices than queer men have been about my eating habits, my politics, my style of appearance. And regardless of the mainstream myth, the kind of heterosexuals I hang out with have better taste in food, music, film, and fashion than what is being offered by the gay mainstream and the metrosexual appropriation thereof. I'm not just talking about sex either. As friends, these guys have been nicer to me than most gay men I know. I once saw a profile on Myspace of a man who listed "gay" and "single" in their perspective places, who added that he was vegan in his interests. I wrote him, just for friendship and solidarity. He wrote back as an apology, the explanation that he was not single and that he had an agreement with his partner that they are not to allow any more homos into their lives! I didn't write him to hook up, but because I felt I needed more queer friends, especially vegans. And even if I thought him or his boyfriend was hot, I CAN RESTRAIN MYSELF from being a home wrecker for the sake of potential friendships!
Don't get me wrong-- I think about 80% (or more) of the heteros I encounter are horrid, from family members to imaginary characters in TV/film to all the people I have to deal with on a daily level. The straight guys I hang out with, punk or no punk, are different. I really do wish there were many queer men like them, and even more so, I wish there were more queer men that were vegan.

Because the main point and the fact is: vegans taste better. They smell better, even after not bathing for a few days. They feel better. And based on experience, they usually tend to treat you much better as a human being.

I'm sure this is an issue for everyone here - but how big of an issue is it? Could you (or do you?) live with someone who consumes dairy and meat products?

I thought about this because a vegan friend (non-queer) may be moving in with her meat-eating boyfriend and I thought about that maybe some day happening to me and having to maybe live a life where one shares one's refrigerator with a slab of hamburger meat!

And yes, I know I may be over dramatic - it is said that true love is hard enough to find on its own - so why sweat the little things... but is this a "little thing"? You always hear about "Democrats" saying they could never date/live with a "Republican" (like there's really that much of a difference between them - sorry! a little personal political commentary) - but I haven't heard much from a meat-eating/non-meat-eating relationship perspective.

I'm sure we'd all just LOVE to date only other queer vegans - but how many of us are there out there? What are your thoughts?

One Word: LOVE! How should we create and maintain that LOVE? With PEACE! I created this profile with the intentions of facilitating peaceful change in this world. Many people and organizations have great intentions, and with their LOVE they try to create PEACE, but in attempting to do so, they miss their OWN point: That in order to create PEACE, you have to be PEACEFUL! People protest human and animal abuses, screaming WE WANT PEACE, yet they are unable to give it to themselves... What is wrong with this? You CANT create PEACE with VIOLENCE! So how can you help acheive peace, and help stop a war on the other side of the world through acts of hostility? Through screaming and sending out angry, hostile vibrations? You CANT! You NEED to become that PEACE! Ghandi had it right when he said *Be The Change You Wish To See!* This is not to say, that there is never a time to be angry, or express that, because it is important to communicate and express those feelings, BUT the important thing is learning to TRANSFORM that ANGER into CREATIVITY~! Instead of joining and angry screaming crowd, how about sitting down in protest, meditating, and making a statement with silence. (with information available to read) Or going on a hunger-strike (its good for getting media attention and for most people its GREAT for their body and immune system to have a rest, and release energy, usually used to digest. How about doing performance art? Write a song! Write a book! Create a whole show! Get active in your local community. Hold potlucks at your house with wonderful ORGANIC veggie food! Learn about proper nutrition to keep yourself healthy and strong! Meditate! Its SO important to give your mind a rest! For those of us who are passionate about different causes out there, we need a break from letting our mind race, and our heart worry. Sink into silence, and free your thoughts, and fade into Divine Consciousness. (whether that means communication with a deity, or just the simple relaxation of inner silence!) It all comes back to creating PEACE! Peace within, Peace Without! It all starts with you! I am an ardent animal lover, so that is why I chose to become a vegan. I first went vegetarian, because I was overweight, and depressed, and then I learned about how healthy I could be, and how much I could change the world being vegan, so I followed that path.

Anyways....I look forward to getting to know all of you over time.
At some point Id like to do a big veggie raw food based event and drag show/teach-in for the (queer) community. It wouldnt just be limited to drag, also performance art...tho gender bending would be a theme...including 3rd gender drag, faux queens, dragt kings, genderfuckers and all that good stuff.....
perhaps I could even find someone to serve food off of their nearly nude bodies....
could be a fundraiser for local natural health awareness initiatives and stuff like that.....
Lets plan a healing revolution! (or at least have a good time while sharing radical ideas..)
Im a Pisces....and we folk are sensitive. Ive found this to be a very tough city to live in....
Lots of flakes, shallowness, and not much of a vegan community. When I first moved here I connected to the raw vegan community, which was cool...but that was because I had more money and could afford to eat out alot and go to raw food parties and such. Life isnt that way anymore. I would like to connect with other vegans and raw fooders...especially some queer veg folk. I hope my experience will get better...as the few queer vegans Ive met in this city have been very un-promising. With those few I met I encountered alot of discrimination for my beliefs in spirituality, for being conservative in the way that I dont drink, smoke pot, or anything else...but radical in that same sense.
I dont have the perfect body...Im not a stick figure, or a smooth toned guy, as most gay men seem to want....and expect of me (being super skinny) being vegan. But, I do have a loving heart, and my greatest trait I believe is my empathy and compassion....thats why I became a vegetarian in the first place, and what moved me into veganism, and why Im a massage therapist, and do volunteer work and public education.
It seems like Im one of the few left of a dying breed.........are you out there?
And by saying this Im not saying Im perfect or better than thou.....
but rather expressing my hearts being, and desire.
Anyways....I hope you guys dont think Im a nutzo asshole....Im really not.
Its difficult adjusting to this california culture...which I decidedly dont like....at least the negative aspects of flakiness, and non-communication. Where I come from (ny state) if people have a problem they talk to you about it. It doesnt have to be an angry confrontation. People also show up on time, and call if they cant. Some people seem to think that being honest about things is being mean.....or will hurt someone...and in some cases perhaps...but overall I think its best to communicate, if it takes soft words, or sometimes even strong (but tactful) ones.

I'd like very much to meet a nice, health conscious, athletic vegan boy to connect with...even if it's only just for friendship. In a city of over 7 million, I'm having a hard time finding guys that really understand where I'm coming from. Without sounding too harsh, I find that most vegan guys I meet are only in it for the animals and while that's noble, there are lots of other great reasons and to ignore one's physicality is terribly one-sided. ANYWAY....If theres anyone that agrees with me I'd love to talk and even if you don't agree with me I'd love to talk too.

www.queeruption.org/q2006/
In the last Queeruption* in Barcelona there was a proposal by present Israeli queers to hold the next Queeruption in Tel-Aviv, which was welcome by activists from the Middle East, Europe and North America. The initiative came from our belief that as queers we view ourselves as part of the global struggle for freedom, justice and self determination.

Thousands of LGBT people are expected to attend the World Pride event in Jerusalem in August 2006. This event is also used as a chance for the Israeli office of foreign affairs to hide the government’s war crimes behind a rainbow flag. The slogan of the World Pride Parade is “Love Without Borders”. We believe that love without borders should reject fences and walls, occupation, Apartheid, social injustice and ecological destruction. Ther e has been a global call to boycott this event by various Palestine solidarity groups as well. We feel that it is important to push our solidarity further by coming to Israel and Palestine for a celebration of our diversity, empowerment and resistance.

This is the first time that Queeruption takes place outside the borders of rich western states. This Queeruption will also extend beyond the centralized location in Tel-Aviv, to the West Bank and to spice up the World Pride parade in Jerusalem. There are also possibilities for people interested in staying longer to join solidarity work in the area which we will provide links to. There will be also a group who will come to Tel-Aviv some time before the event to help set things up.

Given the social and cultural situation there are a lot of issues to be considered and discussed during the preparation process and through the event. We need your help, whether you are coming or not, with fundraising, publicity, knowledge, ideas and skills or on ground preparation.

For this, or if you have any further questions or comments please contact by subscribing the new mailing list of the Queeruption. Send a mail to: majordomo@lists.queeruption.org wi th the words: subscribe queeruption9tel-aviv in the body of the message.

For more information and languages check our new website (which is still under construction): www.queeruption.org/q2006

* Queeruption is a do-it-yourself, anti-commercial, non-hierarchal, safe and open space for workshops, music, art, actions, parties, sex, performances and everything you propose and/or prepare. Queeruption welcomes and celebrates all gender identities and sexualities, with no toleration to sexism, macho behavior, racism, hetrophobia, homophobia, transphobia, discrimination based on different abilities or ages and any form of aggression.

There is plenty of space for bicycle parking in the back and the yards get lots of sunlight and a garden is in the works.

There's a pretty fun book that has just been published by Soft Skull Press ( www.softskull.com ) called "Please Feed Me: A Punk Vegan Cookbook" by Niall McGuirk.

Here's the blurb from the book's back cover (and yeah, it is kind of corny - but I think you'll get the picture):

"After years of surviving on potato chips and angry, three chord rock, punk vegans and vegetarians got serious ... about nutrition. And taste. The result is the most comprehensive punk cookbook to come out of any scene. 'Please Feed Me' showcases the culinary hits of the Hope Collective, a long-running Dublin community and venue, along with photos and anecdotes from favorite punk bands, including Fugazi, Bikini Kill, chumbawamba, and many more. 'Please Feed Me' is more than just an ode to good eating: it's the perfect blend of the rock, art, activism, and community that form the layers of the punk-rock food pyramid."

Lots of fun photos in it - and some pretty good recipes, too! Reading it now reminds me of turning vegetarian years ago when I was a (punk rock) teenager and being what was then referred to as a "Doritos Vegetarian" - our daily food intake pretty much consisting of potato chips and beer (mostly Olde English 8000). How times change... (thankfully)

Ayway, check out the book!

Ever been to the Moonlight? It's on 20th and Jackson...ish. I've always been stoned when i go....so you may want to look it up. The food is amazing and puts Bamboo Garden to shame (i still love you though). Now i will warn you that theres a meat-eaters menu....BUT the vegetarian menu (which is fully vegan) is HUGE. Yesterday we got the General Tso's Chicken, Sesame Beef (the BEST), and the bamboo hotpot. Three of us ate on that. Don't expect to be in and out. Its very Vietnamese in that you have a relaxing dining experience. Tea is given standard. If you go during lunch, you may have to point at the menu at points since the older woman isn't so great with the english. The food is delicious. Try it! Give them business and keep them open! I want to eat there for a very long time;)
Thanks kids! Salut!

the basics:
STARTING Dec. 1st or earlier: one room with a closet and window in a cute little cottage HOUSE (no one above or below) for $493.75 a month plus 1/4 of the utilities. The house has a back yard with fruit trees and a mini front yard with roses and flowers!. Oh theres a hammock too:) Theres a big kitchen, common space and one bathroom. We are located in the wonderfully neighborhoody area of Portola. Theres plenty of small neighborhood businesses and resturaunts, plus the greates LITTLE library branch ever. (Nearest cross street is Silver and San Bruno) a 5 minute walk from the Alemany Farmers market, and 2 blocks from the #44 and #9 Muni.

Who we are:
-one 21yr old, gender queer person who likes bikes, eating coookies, visiting the dumpsters, listening to and singing Ani di Franco, happy hour at the Lexington, yoga in the morning, reading poems outloud in used bookstores, manatees, shadows, farmers markets, trying to stay focused in school and listening to my heart bravely.

-a queer white woman, 29 who has a hard time fitting into all the boxes ppl try to get her into. She's a farmer, biker, music maker, knitter, Rainbow Grocery worker, garden teacher, laugher, dancer, meeting goer:(, lover of grey water, ssex positive fool, and a wonderful dork. Trying to be more of a sitter, listener, and worker of self-growth and anti-opression stuff.

-another queer person 31, who would be hard pressed to give you a gender they feel entirely comfy with. They love to LAUGH and to talk and get down to the nitty gritty, a big science teacher nerd who loves plants and growth. Skateboarder, arty-head, dancer and sillypants extrodinaire. WOrks with tha youth and loves it.

Who YOU are: Someone who is working on honest and clear communication. One who values self-growth and working against opression in all its forms (seriously). A queer person who is at LEAST vegetarian (no meat in the house) and who like to cook, clean and keep up with a very busy but cosy communal home. We share food and you should like to too! You should like animals, especially little fur-ball kitties cuz we have one and are open to more animals(bonuses for cute pitbulls!)

Please check the map for the area and email or call us if you want to join our happy home. Please include a description of yourself and what you want in a home. We will delete those that do not have descriptions!

For the uninitiated Ariel is a participant on UPN’s newest reality TV disaster, Amish in the City. Five Amish young adults, going through Amish coming-of-age experience rumsprina, are picked to live in a house with six city dwellers from diverse backgrounds. While the results have so far been as dry as a box rye crackers, one city dweller Ariel, who is described simply as “vegan”, has inadvertently created some moments of truly skin crawling hilarity. This is my open letter to her:

Dear Ariel,

Please shut up.

While it’s nice to see a Vegan on TV, it pains me that you have been chosen as our representative. The UPN executives, most likely cohorts of Dear Carnivore, are surely chuckling every time you open your mouth and reveal yourself to be the food freak you are.

To set the record straight Ariel, eggs are not chicken abortions. They are a natural part of the chicken’s reproductive cycle and remain unfertilized and lifeless. Vegans don’t eat them because the methods of egg production are cruel and they aren’t particularly good for you.

Likewise, cows do not come from outer space. I know this is hard to believe, but really, they don’t. We have it on pretty good authority that they come from here – planet Earth, a place you are definitely not familiar with.

Next time you decide to open your mouth and say something, please think twice and plug it with some twigs and berries. Your Vegan brothers and sisters will thank you for it.

Thank you,
Justin Allan

PS – salad isn’t food. It’s an appetizer.
