Do you like it RAW?

topic posted Thu, January 27, 2005 - 5:22 PM by  MICHAEL
Just curious if any of you boys and grrls are into eating just raw/living vegan foods? I'm kind of looking into it - and have been experimenting (oh no! there's that word!) with it lately - and have gone weeks with no processed or cooked foods. I feel great while doing it, but haven't made the long term commitment... yet.

I'd say right now my daily diet is generally about 75% raw fruits and vegetables - but I am looking at increasing it.

    hi michael!
i haven't looked into the raw diet too much before. occasionally i frequent a raw restaurant but it pretty much stops there.
do you find it takes a lot more preparation?
can you give an example of your daily diet?
i'm just trying to get a sense of your nutritional scope and gauge the level of difficulty with putting it together.
    thanks,
    max
p.s. it's good to "see" you.

i actually just made some raw hummus for the first time today from some raw cookbook by "juliano" who looks kind of funny in the pictures...

anyway, i had never let beans sprout like it called for before and it was fun, and the hummus tastes good.

Hey Max! It's good to "see" you again, too!

I like the simplicity of eating raw. When I am eating "raw", my meals consists of just "unadorned" fruits and vegetables - so my breakfast usually consists of a fruit salad, my lunch is a large vegetable salad (any uncooked veggies I could get together), and dinner is a variation of the same. During the day, I snack a lot as well (again just uncooked fruits and vegetables). I do combine my foods improperly, but other than that it is relatively healthy. Incredibly simple - and some would even say boring...

I also crank it up a bit by going to ALIVE and CAFE GRATITUDE a couple times. I will eat prepared raw foods when I dine out, but otherwise I don't really do it at home (for no other reasons than I'm lazy). I know there are different ways of eating raw - and I have seen some great books with some exotic recipes - but I'm not much of a cook (or in this case a food preparer).

I know this sounds weird, but I am not really focusing too much on the nutritional aspect as I just eat like this in spurts. If I were to go hardcore, I would obviously do so (I know I should probably pay more attention regardless). I usually end up eating non-raw vegan because I am out somewhere and it just seems easier - or I want a burrito or some thing (but when I am eating just uncooked veggies and fruits - I usually lose my cravings for cooked foods). I also take some vitamins and herbs.

So that is me in a nutshell(!). The only problem is that - although I feel awesome while eating this way - I do experience weight loss periodically and my fat count is pretty low. So I am dealing with that.

Excuse the long post, but it's exciting to write about. Anyone else want to write about their experiences or thoughts on eating raw?

raw vegan mashpotatoes consist of potatoes, cauliflower and garlic prolly some dill or black pepper
it seems that a lot of prepared raw foods are made with the food processor
Blanching, dropping desired item in boiling hot water for a few seconds and them dropping them in ice cold water
although not raw helps with digestion and keeps a lot of nutrients intact
        xo

needless to say i was curious to this post... raw indeed! hehe

i did a month on raw foods as part of an experiment... i found it very hard and felt half starved all the time. i have a high metabolism so it was wasting me. i stopped doing it because i felt terrible. i did a lot of research but i find that what works for you, well works for you no matter what books say.

its deff about variety. there are unprocessed oils you can use in your food and high fat foods if thats a worry. sprouted stuff is great... i used to make sprouted hommus all the time!

the big question though is why do it? the reasons themselves are as big as anything and i feel the food i eat is where im at on an emotional/physical level. im only asking as that determins direction and why approach to raw foods you have.

id also question taking vitamins? are you using organic foods as well?

i have other question and they may seem odd but i found that one of my problems... being in berlin - a big city that expence, freshness, avaliability and so on all effected me in ways i didnt expect.

good luck with it though as nothing ventured nothing gained!lol

i would just like to interject here that avacado's have a very high fat content. i make sure i get them every week when i go grocery shopping as i have a high metabolism as well.
(i know nothing about eating raw though so i'm stepping back again)

no, good to point out... i used to eat them a lot and still do, but i got increasingly into the habit of using other oils, some for omega3 and others for the taste... cant beat olive oil!

cool. it is hard enough to find vegetarian queer males, let alone vegans and raw foodists. i experimented with raw foods last year. however, this homo is a homeless hobo and much of my food comes from dumpsters. i would definitely eat much more raw organic foods if i had the money.

yeah- the best thing about being in portland oregon is that i didn't have to be "freegan" but i could even get by being a total vegan for FREE!!! if i could find organic dumpsters, there would be a very good chance that the majority of my diet would be raw. but back to the original thread- i found that using collard greens as a "tortilla" for "burritos" and a cabbage leaf for "tacos" is a great idea. if it weren't for avocados and lots of them, my experiments with raw food would never have even made it as far as they did. sprouting is kinda fun. ideally i would make it so my overall diet is 75% raw, and a good deal would be wild crafted- maybe within the year. last year i was thinking it would be a great idea to create a vegan meal zine that included many great recipes of raw food dishes- so that you could slowly introduce raw foods to your diet with the overkill of immediate "purism". i admire any one that can do it, but in my many years of experience, so many cold tofurkey vegans are eating meat again after a couple of years of yelling at every one else for it. long live long-term vegans!!!

hey there michael. i dont know how old this post is, or if anyone will read this, butt in the event one does...

this is my first 15 seconds on tribe.net...just stumbled across it. this is also the first post of mine...feel chosen. :)

anyhoo, i am a raw food vegan chef in santa monica (the birthplace of the Raw Movement). u have chosen well, my friend. there is no healthier diet on earth. for so many reasons, energetically if for no other, that raw foods are key to health and ongoing vitality. think of this: humans are the only animals on earth that cook their food. and it wreaks havoc on the body. 80-85% of the mineral content of food is destroyed when cooked. 100% of the living enzymes are also destroyed. this means your body needs to give up its own enzymes in order to digest it. over years of three meals a day, this takes its toll. (think of all the debilitating signs on aging).

also, the water content in food is lost through steam, and since your body must liquiefy everything before it can digest it, it further dehydrates you by sapping your body's water supply. probably the worst thing about cooking food is the death of the lifeforce of the food. if you've never heard of kirlian photography, check it out. it takes pictures of the energy fields, "lifeforce", of different things. if you hold a picture of say, an apple, up against that of a cooked apple, then you really get a clear picture of the damage done. normally there are glowing, ephereal fields of energy radiating out of the apple, while the cooked apple has barely a shimmer. simply mindblowing stuff.

anyhoo, hate to lecture, just wanna pass on the knowledge. i myself dont follow a 100% raw diet. my boss does and where i work, we do. but as for myself, a little brown rice and tofu are my follies. but hey, anything is better than beef, yea? :D

    take care and good luck!

ps eat organic and only organic.

Santa Monica is SOOOO not the birthplace of the raw food movement. The Essenes have been doing it for thousands of years...and as for the modern movement..it was started by many amazing individuals...Arhold Ehret, Edmond Bordeux Szekely, and Viktoras Kulvinkas among some others. Even the raw food restaurants and other merchandising raw stuff didnt start in Santa Monica..tho Im sure many egotistical locals who think because they live there, they are better than everyone else...so they think it must have started there. Anyways...as for queer raw fooders...I created a tribe just for that....look through my tribe list and its there! Veggie Queers Eat it Raw... hehe...

In my limited experience, I have felt great when I limit my diet to raw fruits and veges. My metabolism isn't that fast though. I am hypoglycemic and so I have to be careful not to drink too much fruit juice. Despite what the labels may say on other brands regarding their 100% naturalness, Odwala OJ has been the only juice brand that I can drink without getting all sugar-doped outfor whatever reason. I'm not sure if Odwala would be raw- does pasturization count as cooking? My friend tried to eat raw but he's alot more allovertheplace than me- he was always hungry-and he's super gassy. But, I think he's gassy anyway :) All in all I think raw foods really work. Just watch out for those nuts- they will make you fat like me :)

i just wanted to pop in here for a min and say that i've been raw for 5 years now and really love it....it's been a discipline that's for sure and i'm still finding ways to balance my food intake...i'm hypoglycemic too and my metabolism is very high, so i have to watch that i don't just glom on sugar and then crash...

also eating just to eat, whether out of a need for comfort or whatever emotion it is that i do it for can be hard for me to manage...

and it is hard to meet queer raw guys, i must admit....def. looking for more raw community!

        peace,
        Storm

Christ! I just want a boyfriend. Vegan would be nice... but I don't care whether he's from Santa Monica or Essenia (wherever that is).

      :-)

As for "doing it raw in spurts" I thought that was a clever turn of phrase.

I've been doing raw for about a month now. Amazing. So much more energy. I travel lots with my work, so it is a challenge. I find I eat much less now that I do the raw diet. I think it is important to do fun and interesting things with raw foods. For me just a plate of plain veggies don't do it. I need to make a sauce or something. Also I have to cut up the veggies in smaller pieces. They can't be too big.

          your 2 best friends

          1 - Food processor
          2 - Food deydrator

Juicer is always nice to have too

my breakfasts and lunches are usually raw, but then i tend to eat something warm for dinner ~ i dont have the time to put all the energy it takes in going 100% raw ~ thats just me

I went vegan for a month; plus no gluten and no sugar and i never felt better

    Hey There Michael...

I'm a little behind on this post, LOL...But I just couldn't resist chiming in.

I love Raw Foods. I just got into it a little over a year ago, and I have to say that when I was eating nearly 100% raw, I felt great, my skin looked outstanding, and my energy levels soared. Although I try to incorporate as much Raw Food into my diet as possible, it is hard finding organic produce where I live during the off seasons, so I do a lot of juicing, and I occasionally treat myself.

Keep up with the good work! You inspire people like me!

    Peace

Hey I dunno whether you're still interested or likely to check this as its been over 3 years since yu originally posted this, but I thought Id put in my 2 cents.

Im really into raw foods. Admittedly Im not 100% raw anymore, though I was a fruitarian for a year and felt fantastic. I will definately do it again, but most likely when I move away from the UK. I find its really difficult to get cheap and ripe fruit here. Or it became difficult.

I tend to favour Dr Doug Grahams approach to raw foods over anyone elses. Mainly because I got into raw foods because it seemed more natural...and most other approaches are vegetable based and take heaps of preparation. Plus raw veggies are much blander. I tend to trust intuition, and for me, I think fruits smell and taste great for a reason, and you can only eat and enjoy so much raw unflavoured veggies for a reason.

Dougs approach is (or at least was...hes getting into low-fat gourmet junk food now to entice more people to eat raw; and to compete with the high-fat gourmet approaches) Do it like the animals...Eat whole fresh ripe raw organic plant foods, one type of food at a time, when you're hungry til you're full.

I find its alot easier to maintain caloric intake and weight with this approach than other raw approaches too. Since fruits are higher in calories than veggies.

Typical day for me when I ate 100% raw would be:

morning breakfast: 5-6 mangoes or a whole watermelon, or sometimes one or two melons of some other kind.

Lunch: 12-22 bananas (usually about 16 tbh, but each day it depended how hungry I was and how physically active I was.) Some days Id have a few stick of celery with it as well.

Dinner: 8-12 nectarines or oranges as a starter
then Huge Salad, pretty simple, just with some Romaine or batavia lettuce, occassionally some Kale. Lots of tomatoes and cucumber, and half an avocado or so. The other half I would either not eat if I didnt want it, or would blend up with some tomatoes or oranges or lime to make a dressing for the salad.

Occassionally (1/week, sometimes 1/fortnight I would pop some hempseed powder in with a smoothie. Other times I would just blend up the whole salad in the evening into a raw soup/drink. To do this, I would mix up the acid fruit and the avocado first, as this helped to emulsify the fats, then throw in the vegetables. That was really yummy.

Mmm I need to move abroad soon. Maybe Ill go raw for summer.

These days I still eat lots of bananas for lunch, though usually only 4 days a week, and I dont bother with breakfast.

    Hope this helps

    Take Care

    Adam x
