hello everyone,
i had some questions regarding food allergies. i've been vegan for about 5 years and i think i've had some food allergies the entire time, but am just now starting to take them seriously out of health concerns.
for the past few months i have been keeping a detailed food journal and have been noticing that i have digestion problems whenever i eat or drink: soy milk, tofu, any sort of breads/ noodles with processed flour.
of course i dont have health insurance or even money at the moment to see a nutritionalist, but i was looking for some insight into alternative foods to eat/ any other people who have soy/ wheat/ flour sensitivity, etc.
i've been doing some reading about macrobiotics and have introduced a lot more natural grains into my diet and some lentils and miso. this has seemed to help, but it has definately not solved the issue.
any help would be appreciated!
thanks,
grant

Re: food allergy- questions
Wed, December 14, 2005 - 6:47 PMthis is not uncommon. id suggest changing the milk substitutes, if you need protein use quinoa instead of tofu... if you are wheat intolerant then there is many options... but maybe its a gluten thing? anyways id go for rye breads, rice cakes, spelt (often ok for intolerant ppl... has gluten in it though)
aslo think about probiotics if your having digestion issues... think asidopholis. also is the digestion an acid reaction? bloating? if so you could also consider a half t-spoon of alluvial clay a day... this sorted me out!
you may also need to look at other issues such as possible candida overgrowth? this might be contributing...
it a lot to think about so just work at it slowly and move over to the many alternatives.
good luck!

Re: food allergy- questions
Fri, December 16, 2005 - 10:26 PMyou might want to try isolating the wheat gluten and see if that helps. it's practically in everything so it's hard to isolate, sometimes even spices and teas will have fortified ingredients that don't say wheat gluten on the label. if this seems to be the case you could look further into Celiac Disease.
i have a friend who has it and she is just very careful about ingredients and doesn't eat out too much.
i hope you feel better. -

Sun, December 18, 2005 - 10:34 PMyes you should try it and indeed quite often it isnt labelled... my fruends mother promotes gluten free products and she tell em of crazy shit like yougurt thats strained through wheat and so on... its a real mine field! -

Re: food allergy- questions
Wed, January 11, 2006 - 2:20 AMEating more raw foods would help. Also eat sprouted grain breads.....eliminate soy products...or at least reduce them. Soy is a major allergen, as is wheat. Wheat gluten is horrible for you..it makes you mucousy and causes your red blood cells to stick together. Soy also isnt very digestible. If you cut down on those things and eat more raw foods....and ginger..it should be much better. For proteins eat sunflower and buckwheat sprouts!

Re: food allergy- questions
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 9:37 AMSoy and wheat are common allergens since they are in everything. We are over-exposed. But theyre also unnatural foods, so you can either think of it as a problem, or, as I prefer to, that your body just recognises junk. Gluten is, in my opinion, more of a drug than a food. It contains 15 strains of exogenous opioids...and we all know what opioids do to your digestive system.
Previous recommendations Id go along with mostly. Check out its not a gluten thing, maybe get a celiacs prick tester. Try either sprouted breads like spelt bread, thats quite sweet and nice, or just regular spelt breads. you could try using gluten free bread flour to make bread. You can get alot of brown rice and millet substitutes for things like noodles, pasta etc these days. from the health food shop.
Try just using other legumes than soy instead, and stay away from the tofu. Could also be a protein digestion issue. Maybe try taking a Zinc citrate supplement for 2 months. Zinc is involved in cell integrity and is essential for proteins synthesis. Since all enzymes are proteins, zinc is essential for making sure youre digesting proteins.
Eat lots more fruit and less fat, though be sure to get your nuts and seeds in there for some added food-source zinc. You cant go wrong with fruit, consider it a blessing that youre reacting this way.
Remember miso is soya, although generally considered easier to digest.
Its hard to give you specific advice with such limited info. And its been over 2 years since you posted so this problem has hopefully long since subsided...but anyway.

Perhaps consider taking L-glutamine
